Sports Nutrition & Hydration for Youth Athletes
All right everybody welcome to Children's Hospital my name is Jamie Faison and I made physical therapist assistant a certified athletic trainer in a strengthening auditioning specialist I work here for Children's Hospital at the Sports Medicine Center and like to welcome you all thank you for coming out especially during dinner times we talk about nutrition I want to get you guys teach you guys a little bit about my experience with teaching young athletes about nutrition and hydration in a functional way in a way that's actionable and give you guys some just some pointers and things that I've learned I'm working with young athletes I would say I was the head athletic trainer at Berkeley high school for nine years I've been working here the center for the last six years I work all day long with young athletes from 8 to 18 years old primarily but I occasionally work with athletes who are 2025 years old but primarily in that middle school high school age range and some of the young people I'm working with in the center their main their main sport that they play is PE so we're talking about not just the highest level athletes but all young people I'm trying to teach young people the way to eat the way they to exercise the way to be healthy not just for their sport but for their entire lives we have here at the Sports Medicine Center we have three campuses we have of course our main hospital in Oakland we have a Sports Medicine Center there come on in sign in on the sheet and then grab one of the bags there we have our main hospital in Oakland we also have a clinic here in Walnut Creek and we have a new clinic in San Ramon that's open it's a little smaller but we have three sports medicine centers that just specialize in working with young athletes sports medicine needs alright just a little notice off the top as a physical therapist assistant I'm allowed to give you guys nutritional advice as well I don't say it's going to cure any disease disorder or condition so we're gonna be talking in general about sports nutrition concepts for young athletes so when I work with young people I try and really simplify the concepts of sports nutrition and thinking about the thing that I tell young athletes all the time is eating a well-balanced diet based on fruits vegetables and lean sources of protein this is kind of the athletes diet that I try and promote also starting to think about when you eat sometimes is just as important as what you are eating especially for an active young person who's participating in school all day and practice after school and then tournaments a lot of my young athletes especially soccer players baseball players basketball players are playing multiple events over the course of the day so when you're eating nutrients when you're consuming nutrients is sometimes more important than what you're eating.
